The Relationship between Mothers of Preschoolers’ Adult Attachment and Parenting Efficacy: The Mediating Effect of Mentalization

|
This study examined the influence of mothers’ adult attachment on parenting efficacy and the mediating effect of mothers’ mentalization. Participants were 183 mothers of young children (3 to 6-year-olds) attending daycare centers in the capital area. Descriptive, correlational, and mediation analyses were conducted. Mothers’ adult attachment had a significant negative effect on parenting efficacy. The proposed pathway of influence among attachment avoidance, mentalization, and parenting efficacy was not significant. Mothers’ mentalization had a significant mediating effect in the influence of mothers’ attachment anxiety on parenting efficacy. Implications, limitations, and future research directions are presented.
